How Settings is laid out

Click the gear at the top of the sidebar to open Settings. It opens in its own window, with six tabs down the left side: Detection, Redaction, Review, Account, App and Support. To find a setting, type a word from its name or description into the search box above the tabs.

Changes take effect as you make them, so there is nothing to save. Click Done or press Esc to close Settings.

Detection

• Profile chooses the set of rules Lex Cloak scans with. Detection profiles describes each one.
• Remember category choices carries the categories you turned on or off over to your next document.
• Auto-detect signatures checks each scanned document for handwritten signatures. It is on unless you turn it off. See Signatures and handwriting.

Redaction

Label sets the text printed on each black box in the saved file: no text at all, REDACTED, a FOIA exemption code such as (b)(6), CONFIDENTIAL, or your own words. It changes only the text on the box, never what is redacted. Redaction labels covers each choice.

Review

These settings change what you see while you review. None of them changes what is redacted.

Match labels

Show icons and Show text choose how each match is marked on the page and in the sidebar list: with its category icon, its category name, both, or neither. The example under the two switches shows the result as you change them.

Low-confidence matches

Show low-confidence matches lists the matches Lex Cloak is unsure about. It changes what you see, not what gets redacted. How detection works explains confidence.

Saved choices

Auto-save my choices saves your choices in a separate file next to the redacted PDF each time you download, without asking. When it is off, Lex Cloak asks at each download. Its own Reset to default button turns it back off. Working sessions explains the file and how to pick up where you left off.

Account

Account shows whether Lex Cloak is licensed on this computer, and to which email address and plan. Activate license or Deactivate license sits beside it, and the devices your license is active on can appear below, each with a Remove button. See Activate your license and moving to a new computer.

App

The opening splash

Lex Cloak plays a short branded splash when it starts. Press any key or click to skip it. To stop it altogether, turn off Show splash on launch under Appearance. The change applies the next time you open Lex Cloak.

Updates

Check for updates now looks for a newer version straight away. On Windows, Install automatically applies new versions in the background when they are ready. On a Mac, Lex Cloak tells you when a new version is ready to download. More in keeping Lex Cloak current.

Reset defaults

Reset defaults, at the bottom of the App tab, puts your detection and review preferences back the way they started: the detection categories switched on, matches marked with icons and text, low-confidence matches shown, signatures checked automatically, and the plain black box with no label. It takes effect straight away, with no confirmation.

It does not clear your Always Redact or Never Redact lists or your license. It also leaves your detection profile, the saved choices setting, the splash and update settings, and the width of the sidebar as they are.

Reset tutorials, just above it, is separate. It brings back the first-run coach marks, the tips that point out features as you meet them.

Support

• System information shows the app version, your system, and the versions of the parts Lex Cloak is built from, with Copy for support to copy it. It holds nothing from your documents.
• On a Mac, an OCR engine choice may also appear. It picks what reads scanned pages: Tesseract, the default, or Apple Vision, marked experimental. If you notice missing redactions after switching, switch back to Tesseract.

• Contact support and Send feedback each start an email to help@lexcloak.com.

The About box

The i button at the top of the sidebar, next to the gear, opens the About box. It shows the version, a note that detection runs on this computer and your documents stay on it, a reminder to review before you share, a link to this help center, and a button to watch the getting-started tour again.

The version also appears under the Lex Cloak name at the top of the sidebar. Click it to copy the version, which helps when you write to support.

Resize the sidebar

Drag the divider between the sidebar and the document to make the sidebar wider or narrower, and Lex Cloak remembers the width next time. It is not a setting, so Reset defaults leaves it alone.
