- 1.macOS Preview is free and built-in on macOS, and there is no Windows equivalent. Its Redact tool (Tools > Redact) deletes the underlying text rather than covering it, but the markup shapes sitting beside it only hide content visually, so which one you pick matters. Older macOS versions may not offer Redact at all, so check your own Tools menu. It does manual selection only (no automatic detection or OCR), which is practical for a few items on short, born-digital PDFs, not scanned or long documents.
- 2.Acrobat Pro can do each of these, but as separate steps you start yourself. On the Pro and Studio plans its AI Assistant can find sensitive text by meaning from a typed request, with the app language set to English and the machine online, and Adobe is rolling that out in phases. Its Find text and redact tool searches for words or patterns, and scanning plus OCR is a further step. None of it runs on its own when you open a file.

Many PDFs are scanned paper documents — essentially images saved as PDF. Without OCR, redaction tools can't see the text in these files, so sensitive information slips through silently. Lex Cloak automatically detects image-based pages and runs OCR to extract the text before scanning for PII. You don't have to do anything — it just works. Other tools may offer OCR separately, but Lex Cloak makes it seamless and automatic as part of the scan.

About your work in progress

While you work on a document, Lex Cloak saves your choices to a small file next to the original, named temp-meta-data_ followed by the document's name, with a .lexcloak ending. It holds where each redaction goes and what you decided, not the document's text, and it stays on your own computer, like your documents.
It stays in that file. The next time you open Lex Cloak, or the original document, it offers your work back so you can pick up where you left off. Your original PDF never changes, because Lex Cloak always writes a separate redacted copy and leaves the source file alone.
Lex Cloak asks you to confirm first, because a download finalizes the document. Once the redacted copy is saved, Lex Cloak deletes the temp-meta-data file and closes the document. To change anything after that, open the original again.
Earlier versions of Lex Cloak could save your choices in a .lexcloak.json file next to your PDF, called Saved choices. That file lists the items you flagged in plain words, so do not send it to anyone. The current version no longer uses these files. When it finds them, it offers to delete them, and you choose which ones go. You can also delete them yourself, like any other file.
